# New research project "Student Agency in European University Alliances"

October 10, 2024

My current research focuses on exploration of the classical theories of structure-agency and human action in the context of higher education (HE) and specifically to consider the role of student agency for self-formation. I advance the theory of student agency as a condition to and an objective of higher education as self-formation. This is to challenge the predominance of behaviorist explanations of student engagement as the defining characteristics of student success. This is also to challenge the reductionist premise of inquiry in Sociology of Higher Education on “college effects on students” disregarding the effects students have on the HE institutions and communities of which they are part. I am also interested in how time, space and place relate to different elements of student agency as a multidimensional and dynamic concept, and how agency affects student experiences, pathways, and outcomes. Empirically I investigate student agency in context of European Universities alliances since these present new education and mobility opportunities to students as well as pose challenges to students to navigate and decide on their pathways due to complexities of structures and processes, and communication channels of these alliances. The project is funded by the ERC Complementary scheme of the Slovenian Research Agency (ARIS N7-0306)
